BRNC Speed Sailors Approach 40Kts

RC (Windsurfing) - 14 May 15 Windsurfing

A small team of windsurfers from BRNC braved the early May gale force winds and reached some fantastic speeds

Rob and Trish Dunn and Ben Easton from BRNC headed to St Johns Lake, Devonport with the promise of 40-45 Kt winds and flattish water offering a chance to reach some ridiculous speeds. The conditions were testing, with all three sailors over-powered at times but they had a great sail in the mild weather.

The best run of the day was achieved by Rob Dunn, claiming a magnificently scary 38.73 knots on a 5.3m sail! To place the speed achieved in context, the winning speed in the Professional class at Weymouth Speed Week 2014 was 34.56 Kts (average speed for 500m run) with similar windspeeds experienced during the Portland event.

The RNSA windsurfing team continue to develop their speed sailing skills and if you are interested in joining them, all intermediate windsurfers are welcome to try. The RN will be entering a team into the 2015 Weymouth Speed Week for the Inter-Service Speed Championships - fancy joining them, then contact Nic Dodd, Rob Dunn or Tom Joyce.
