Weymouth Regatta 2016 with RNSA Portland participation

Weymouth hosts Spinlock IRC Small Boat Championship at this year’s Regatta

This year’s regatta on the weekend of 3rd/4th September included the Spinlock IRC Small Boat Championships for handicaps under 0.94. Twelve boats including High Hopes – a Dubois Half Tonner from the late 70’s based in Portland with a crew of mainly RNSA members aboard – competed in five races over the two days in the designated IRC4 class.

The weekend was overshadowed by a forecast weather front due to give strong winds and heavy rain passing through on the Saturday afternoon, which duly turned up and led to much reduced visibility. The race committee wisely stopped racing early, but not early enough to prevent a good soaking on the way back to our berth in strengthening wind! Two triangle-and sausage races on the Saturday in winds up to 25 knots saw plenty of heroics downwind with spinnakers, but all the class came through unscathed.

Weymouth SC hosted the evening’s activities with a hog-roast and some free beer! As well as a special welcome for yachts coming from elsewhere, both the current and former Commodores of the club expressed their pleasure to me about a boat from RNSA Portland taking part.

Sunday was still windy, particularly at the Bill where gusts of 40 knots were being recorded mid-morning, but with a westerly coming off the shore Weymouth Bay seemed well protected. Winds were just below 20 knots and dropping, which allowed the committee to run three triangle-and-sausage races finishing near the harbour prior to the prize-giving at the Royal Dorset.

Our crew greatly enjoyed the regatta, which was well organised and fun. Despite a few mishaps, including minor gear failure, we managed a 5th place overall.

We would encourage any racing folk from Portsmouth looking for something a little different to come next year, perhaps making a long weekend of it with a passage along the Jurassic coast to get there and back.
