RNSA(P) Wednesday Autumn Series Race 5

Portsmouth - 21 Sep 17 Offshore

The 9 yachts that slipped out of Portsmouth harbour at low water to take the long way around to the start line at Gilkicker were rewarded by some fine Autumn sailing complete with sunset.

Sunshine, the rostered SOOD could only muster 2 crew (perhaps because in his mind Malcolm Roberts was still sipping chianti on the Amalfi coast) however the newly scrubbed Electron V offered to take on the task which was gratefully accepted.
A course was duly set to Motherbank, Kemps Quay and back, Alas a better windfind before announcing the course might have persuaded them to reverse the order and give a true beat rather than a long port tack drag out to the windward mark. However the lack of tacking clearly suited Danegeld with her crew of senior citizens because they leapt around the course like a young gazelle on speed and took the win. The gentle drag race sparked into life at the final mark as the five front runners arrived within a couple of boatlengths of each other with spinnakers flying and on different gybes. Electron came charging in on port and executing her gybe perfectly for once she edged into clear air at the mark and extended in the last few metres to hold onto a second place behind Danegeld.

Note: I'm off to Tenerife in search of some Autumn sun next Tuesday and there is not room in my luggage for my laptop therefore the NHC results will not be available until after my return on 6 Oct. However I am hoping that Kit can provide the IRC positions which he can forward to me for distribution to the competitors. Good luck with the next 2 races, I'll see you on 11 Oct. RH
